There are many visual note taking methods, such as mind mapping, charting, and others. Mind mapping, however, represents a rather special category that, in our opinion at least, merits its own category (site even). Consequently, this site focuses on other aspects and methods of note taking.
For many people, visual methods prove to be highly convenient. The reason could be dyslexia, ability to organize important pieces of information in a way they find comfortable with, or simply because it could be said that it improves attention span and critical thinking abilities. However, these note taking methods do have drawbacks, too; above all, they are time consuming, tedious and require high level of concentration during the lecture or discussion, and those are the requirements one must meet in order to obtain accurate and organized notes.
In layman's terms, mind mapping is a note taking method based on drawing circles and connecting them in a meaningful way. So, you draw a big circle in the centre of a page and write your main idea in it. From the central circle you stretch lines in all directions you think you should, and write some sub headings one them. Cornell note taking method is used very frequently. According to it you draw a line 2.5 inches from the left hand side of the page and 6 inches from the right hand side. On the right side of the margin line you write detailed notes. And on the left side you note important keywords to highlight the idea being discussed on the other side. Outline method is also very simple and normally used in offices and academic institutes. The general or the basic idea is given in the first line on the extreme left side of the page and the sub ideas or parts of the main idea are given in later sentences starting with a gap from the left margin or an indent.
